Differential inhibition of biphenyl hydroxylation in perfused rat liver

A differential inhibition of biphenyl hydroxylation by alpha-naphthoflavone and metyrapone was observed in isolated perfused rat liver. alpha-Naphthoflavone inhibited 2- and 4-hydroxylation in livers from beta-naphthoflavone-pretreated animals but had no effect on both reactions in livers from phenobarbital-pretreated animals. Metyrapone inhibited 2- and 4-hydroxylation in phenobarbital-stimulated livers, but only insignificant inhibition of 2-hydroxylation and a slight enhancement of 4-hydroxylation by metyrapone was observed in beta-naphthoflavone-stimulated livers. Papaverine decreases the efflux of42K in guinea-pig atrial heart muscle

The effects of papaverine on resting potential and efflux of42K were investigated in guinea-pig left atria. Papaverine significantly reduced the potassium efflux in beating preparations. In resting preparations, the efflux of potassium was only slightly affected. However, the resting potential was significantly reduced by papaverine by about 5 mV.

Prediction and Interpretation of Some Pharmacological Properties of Cephalosporins Using Molecular Connectivity

A method of molecular connectivity was used to study the pharmacological and antimicrobial properties of 34 cephalosporin antibiotics to verify its applicability to these parameters. By using Kier and Hall connectivity indices (Xi) as well as geometric indices (GIs), good correlation equations were obtained with a low number of variables. In some cases, such as the lethal dose for 50% of group (LD50) values and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, better regression equations were obtained with the GIs alone, confirming their alternative nature with respect to Xi, indices.

An economical hemoperfusion system to determine in vitro clearances of various poisons with different adsorbents.

An economical hemoperfusion system for clearance studies in vitro was developped. It was ascertained, that hemoperfusion using columns which contain 13 g of adsorbent and perfused at a blood flow rate of 1.25 ml/min results in the same relative clearances as when using clinical sized columns containing 300–355 g of the absorbent and run at 100 ml/min. The adsorption kinetics of toxicologically important drugs and pesticides are given as examples. To date 27 substances were tested systematically. The investigation has shown, that no adsorbent is without exception the best one, but the efficacy can vary from substance to substance.

Background:Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) is the most frequent extrathyroidal manifestation of the autoimmune Graves’ disease. GO significantly impacts quality of life and has a psycho-social morbidity. A pharmacological approach to gastric acid inhibition.

Proton pump inhibitors have changed our approach to gastric acid-related diseases. They are much more potent acid inhibitors than H2-antagonists and exhibit a sophisticated mechanism of action. The present review analyses the general pharmacology of proton pump inhibitors and differentiates the specific characteristics of the various compounds that belong to this family. Special emphasis has been placed in describing the clinical implications of such differences and the potential importance for adverse effects.

Phenolic compounds of herbal infusions obtained from some species of the Lamiaceae family

Abstract The present investigation was to estimate the total phenolic content and composition of flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acids in herbal infusions obtained from aerial parts of three Lamiaceae species (Dracocephalum moldavica, Ocimum americanum and Satureja hortensis). The total phenolic content of herbal infusions was determined using a spectrophotometric method, whereas the individual phenolics were assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The HPLC method was developed and validated. The total phenolic content was measured by applying the Folin-Ciocalteu method with reference to gallic acid.
